Allan Kaprow’s “Yard”

Allan Kaprow’s “Yard,” shown below at the Pasadena Art Museum in 1961, encouraged the spectator to participate and explore in a courtyard/room full of tires. Originally, Kaprow had wanted to bring participants to a junk yard, but settled on recreating the scene in Manhattan, and later, other locals.
The purpose of this essay is to put critics we have read into dialogue with one another. Describing how “Yard” fulfills Kaprow’s ideas on art, life and viewership should be part of your response, but you should also consider how it represents ideas discussed by Marshall McLuhan, and even by Andy Warhol in his interview. In short, can we see this as a starting point for understanding the consistent emphasis in the 1960s on the spectator and his/her involvement with an image or place.
