Beam Bending
Learning Outcome
On successful completion of this assignment the student should be able to:
1. Evaluate, analyse and discuss different loading types (bending, shear) on engineering components in order to ensure that a component can perform satisfactorily during its service life.
Brief
A structural steel beam is simply supported and has a span length of 6m, it must withstand a maximum bending stress of 360MPa. The beam is under a perpendicular loadings of 15kN, 25kN, 15kN, 30kN, and 20kN hanging at distances of 0.5m, 2m, 3m, 4.5m and 5.5m respectively from the left supporting point. The Beam carries a uniformly distributed load of 0.8kN/m along its entire length.
A. Calculate and analyse using appropriate methods the structural state of this beam and find out its weakest points. (40%)
B. Investigate and calculate different cross sections in order to ensure that the beam will withstand the stress required. (30%)
C. Calculate the deflection induced on the beam and investigate the different ways to minimise such value. (30%)
Your report should show the process of development for your calculations in a methodological manner leading to your final results and conclusions.
Reading Materials: Module lecture and support notes; also see module reading list. Note: These sources are guides only to commonly available material. Students will also be expected to consult other relevant source material according to the nature of the project.
Submission Requirements: A neatly presented written and/or word processed report approximately 1000 words (excluding calculation) in length detailing out your design calculations in a methodical manner leading to your conclusions and recommendations. You should include the development of data and equations and annotate the steps taken to arrive at your answers.
