capital punishment
Paper instructions:
The United States is a single country, but our federalist system allows individual states to create their own laws and policies across a wide range of issues. The states are diverse in terms of population, geography, economics, and political culture. This assignment will give you the opportunity to learn about how states differ from each other in their laws and policies.
Choose four US states–any four you want. For each state, you need to research and report on the following:
Does the state allow gay marriage? If not, does it allow civil unions? Has the state amended its constitution to prohibit gay marriage?
Does the state allow corporal punishment in the schools? (In other words, are public school teachers or principals allowed to physically discipline students by spanking or paddling them?)
Does the state use the death penalty (capital punishment)?
Provide citations to show where you found the information. The citation must include the name of the website or publication, the name of the specific page or article, the URL, the name of an author, if any, the date the information was posted or updated, if available.*
After you have provided the facts about each state’s laws, write a paragraph reflecting on what you found. Were you surprised by any of the results—how did what you found match up with what you expected of each state? Did you see any patterns or relationships among the policies? For instance, if a state allowed corporal punishment in the schools, did it also allow capital punishment for serious crimes?
