Nature and Nurture Influences on Child Development

For this written assignment, read Chapter 1 of your textbook and watch the videos from McDowell and Pollack. The debate regarding nature versus nurture and how it impacts child development has been ongoing for centuries. This debate is concerned with the extent to which particular aspects of behavior are a product of either inherited (i.e. nature) or environmental (i.e. nurture) characteristics. Throughout history, researchers have often envisioned nature and nurture as separate and opposing influences. Today, developmental theorists increasingly agree that nature and nurture are interdependent, working dynamically together, in child development (McDevitt, 2010). Instructions For this assignment, you will write a paper that answers the following prompts and meets the content and written communication expectations stated below. An effectively written paper will include a succinct introduction, providing an overview of the content and a thesis statement. The following paragraphs should support the thesis statement by providing relevant content and resources to support your ideas. The paper should be well organized and formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center. It will be helpful if you create headings in your document to organize your writing using the labels provided below for each content expectation. Rubric: Content Expectations/Content Criteria

  • Nature Versus Nurture (2 points): Describe the relationship between nature versus nurture.
  • Child Development Influences (2.5 points): Explain the biological, environmental, societal, and cultural influences on child development in relation to nature versus nurture.
  • Influential Factor (2.5 points): Discuss which factor, based on research, is more influential than the other. Use at least two scholarly articles as well as the textbook to support your position.

Written Communication Expectations

  • Page Requirement (0.5 points): Two to three pages, excluding the title and reference pages.
  • APA Formatting (0.5 points): Use APA 6th edition formatting, as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center, consistently throughout the assignment.
  • Syntax and Mechanics (0.5 points): Display meticulous comprehension and organization of syntax and mechanics, such as spelling and grammar.
  • Source Requirement (0.5 points): References the textbook and recommended videos and at least one additional scholarly source to provide compelling evidence to support ideas. All sources on the references page need to be used and cited correctly within the body of the assignment.

DEVELOPMENT IN ACTION ASSIGNMENT

Assignment Purpose & Objectives:

This assignment is designed to provide opportunities for you to reflect on what you have learned through class sessions, the course text, and your experiences as a parent via either the MyVirtualChild simulation. Upon completing this assignment you should be able to:

(a) Analyze and synthesize at least 2 theoretical perspectives (i.e., see Chapter 1 of the textbook) on development

(b) Make explicit connections between theory-to-practice regarding concepts in development

(c) Practice ways to apply developmental theories/concepts to the world of parenting/raising children

(d) Improve your collaboration skills with peers

ASSIGNMENT DESCRIPTION

In a 3-4 page single-spaced document, succinctly and clearly reflect on your experiences parenting your “virtual child.” Be sure to make references to course concepts whenever appropriate. Your paper should be divided into two distinct sections clearly delineated with the headings “Section I” and Section II”. You can choose to include a Works Cited, References page if you are citing or paraphrasing other author’s materials.

Section I – What Went Right/Wrong? (approximately 1-2 pages)

Reflect on your child’s experiences growing up. Describe in detail onething that you believe positively influenced AND one thing thatnegatively influenced your child’s development as they were growing up. In your role as a parent and/or an informed professional in the field of child & adolescent development, be sure to use appropriate terminology & concepts of development in your description about these experiences (and the impact of these experiences) on your child’s learning & development. A strong paper will incorporate theoretical perspectives and concepts which are directly applicable to the specific experience. In addition, a strong paper will illustrate that the author has a strong command/understanding of specific relevant concepts of child & adolescent development.

Reflect on your overall experiences in this class including your experiences as a virtual parent/parent. What have you gained from this semester experience learning about the physical, social, and cognitive development of children & adolescentsIn terms of your personal & professional life, in what ways has this impacted you? In what ways do you feel you will be able to use what you have learned/gained? In what ways do you expect you will use content gained from the course? A strong paper will provide in-depth, meaningful ways the course content is relevant to one’s personal & professional life.

1. In Chapter 1, we learned that the lifespan perspective incorporates the following tenets:

Plasticity
How do these tenets relate to the topics covered in subsequent chapters? Choose 2 topics (such as language development, cognitive development, brain development social bonds, etc.) and explain how each requires at least 3 of the 5 tenets listed above. Use examples from the textbook.

 

2. By the middle of the semester, we will have explored the development of individuals through middle childhood. Based on your understanding of infancy, early childhood and middle childhood, explain how development in these early phases might prepare individuals for adolescence and adulthood. You are required to use examples from the textbook, but you may also use examples from your own life. Make sure you reference concepts and/or theories from the book with your examples.
