Who are we (America)? Where are we situated on the international scene
Paper instructions:
Perceptions at home and abroad-researched, well-cited.
One of the most intriguing questions that we can ask about the concept of the United states as a nation is : Who counts as people? Who actually do we and should we have in mind when we think of something as basic as, we the people,. Since September 11 2001 these questions have taken on a renewed sense of urgency. New proposals to limit immigration, to develop a national identification system, or to limit the freedom of noncitizens living and working within u.s. borders have been debated. At, times national security and individual rights and liberties have been cast as mutually incompatible. The nations relationship with other countries have been tested and redefined, and our status on the global stage continues to be reshape in a new and complex world . Much in the way that the 1941 bombing of pearl harbor propelled in the US into a worldwide conflict and a new role as global superpower, so too have the echoes of September 11 changed our perspective on who we are and where we are situated on the international scene.so we turn again to a fundamental question: Who are we, the people? This question has a long history and can be addressed in many ways. We manifest our views of national identity individually through the stories we tell of struggle, adventure, and achievements, and collectively , throught the documents we create. By such means we make opportunities for the people not previously connected with us to become aware of our presence , to learn about us, and to negotiate how we and they will exist together in time and space. These written expresissions of self and society show us the many ways we have experienced being American, past, present and future. They constitute a fabric of Americaness and demonstrate that through language we have perhaps our best chance to discover and acknowledge who we are, negotiate our similarities and differences, find common ground, identify common concern, and learn to act responsibly in the presence of others. Thus, how do we address this question? Who we are and where we are situated on the international scene?
